It looks like Sam Mendes is done with the James Bond franchise.
While rumours race that Daniel Craig may well be replaced in the role soon, the director of Skyfall and SPECTRE has announced that he is done with superspies.
Speaking about his five years spent on the franchise, the director said: “It was an incredible adventure, I loved every second of it. But I think it’s time for somebody else.”
Mendes was talking at the Hay Festival of literature in Wales and stressed his need to keep moving into fresh things: “I’m a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters.”
As for the casting of the new Bond, the director said that only one person decides who will wear the next tux: “It’s not a democracy … [series producer] Barbara Broccoli decides who is going to be the next Bond, end of story,” he said.
And as for who will be the next 007?: “I can guarantee whatever happens with it, it will not be what you expect. That’s what she [Broccoli] has been brilliant at, and that’s how it’ll survive.”
