In a new interview, Scarlett Johansson talks about the new – not connected to the live-action ones – TRansformers animated movie, Transformers One, which will focus on the relationship between a young Megatron and Prime, friends until their planet is devastated by a civil war that will equally devastate their relationship.
In a recent interview (here), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said: “If you know the origin, they started as friends, and over time things devolved for them and they ended up on two sides. So we’re telling the young Optimus and the young Megatron story. We really are telling the origin story of all Transformers, both what they were at the beginning of it, to how they grow, to how they grow apart.”

Lorenzo di Bonaventura drops loads of details on upcoming Transformers animated movie
It’s a tale that fans of the franchise will know by now but word is that the movie aims to give us an animated experience unlike any before and, perhaps most importantly, will handle the friendship and its destruction with the gravitas of a proper Shakespearean travesty.
In the movie, Johansson plays Elita and, while doing the press for Asteroid City, she talked about the upcoming Robots in Disguise adventure and believes that writer-director Josh Cooley is doing a solid job ad that she, unlike her fellow voice actors, has had the opportunity to see the animation and it’s going to be worth waiting for.
“I’m playing Elita,” she begins, “I’m working with Josh Cooley, who is an incredible writer-director who I adore and have worked creatively with in another capacity.
Forget Jurassic Park, Tyrese Gibson wants to see the Fast & Furious/Transformers crossover
“The film doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen before, it looks so cool! The texture of it is so awesome. And because Josh wrote it, it just feels very… I don’t know, it’s got a very dramatic feeling about it. It’s funny, but it’s got so much heart to it like all of his stuff does. I think it’s a different way of approaching this IP. I think it stands on its own, it’s pretty exciting.”
While I’m very excited to see this story – the first of a trilogy – unfold on the big screen, I’m even more excited by how it’s going to look as we’re heading into a new evolution of animation and how it looks and feels with the Spider-verse movies leading the way and new movies like the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, continuing to go above and beyond fans’ expectations… what this era of animation can for Transformers, I can only imagine but I know I’m hear for it.
There’s no date for release yet but we can tell you it stars Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion… that’s a hell of a cast right there!
