From this point forward, forget the original X-Men trilogy…
Yes, it seems that at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past when Wolverine wakes up and meets Cyclops, Jean and the team, this is now the prime universe and the other movies are gone altogether in the storyline.
Writer-producer Simon Kinberg told Digital Spy: “Everything is an alternate timeline at this point, but the one thing we have established is the end of Days of Future Past, where Wolverine wakes up in the future mansion – that is the destination of this new timeline. So ultimately they are going to become who you see at the end of that movie.”
So that means that – clearly – the Pheonix Saga – or the X3 version of it – never happened and Jean and Cyclops are still ok. So, potentially, we could see it happen again only, you know, better.
It also means that all the characters in that scene: Professor X, Hank McCoy, Rogue, Iceman, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine himself are safe to that point. So does this mean the new Wolverine, unlike the other two, is new timeline too?
While this is classic comic book strategy, we fear a few cinemagoers may be a little confused.
