After Matthew Lillard saying that if his character, Stu Macher, was back for Scream VII, he would lie to our faces about it until the movie opened, he is now saying he would love to come back and Stu is definitely still alive in the Scream universe.
It all kicked off on the Drew Barrymore show a few days ago when Lillard was a surprise guest and the idea of him returning to Scream came up, to which he said: “Stu is definitely alive, right? My character, Stu, is alive…”
Matthew Lillard teases Scream VII return: “If I was, I would lie directly to your face…”
When asked is we could see Stu come back, the star replied: “I would love that, look, if it made sense, if it made sense for the franchise, if Kevin (Williamson, writer/creator) liked it.”
When pressed on if he would return, he just said: “I’m very sweaty…”
However, he has been talking about it further since that interview, saying: “On The Drew Barrymore Show, I said Stu was still alive. And listen, I’ve always said Stu’s alive. I don’t know anyone out there who’s like, ‘I don’t want any part of any future in the sequels or this franchise ever again.’ There’s a world in which he is alive.”
Hmmmmmmmmm…
Lillard is keen to remind us (not that we have ever forgotten), that Stu was originally meant to come back in Scream 3 but real-world events changed that: “I mean, originally, in the third sequel, [ Scream writer] Kevin Williamson was like, ‘Yeah, he’s alive. He’s running kids from from prison, like he’s having kids do horrible things while he’s in prison.’ And the reason that didn’t go is Columbine High School happened right before we went into production, and justifiably so, they changed the entire story around. So there’s a world in which Kevin thought he was alive. And there’s definitely a world in which the last team that did Scream 5 and 6 thought he was alive.”
It’s interesting because Williamson is now back to write – and direct – Scream VII with Neve Campbell and Courtenay Cox returning, so having Stu back now would make the most sense as we already know that this next movie will take us back to the beginning and reveal things we never knew before.
“I would love to be alive, if it makes sense,” Lillard goes on, “But at the end of the day, Scream does not need Matthew Lillard as Stu in it. It’s fine. But, you know, a boy can dream.”
Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed to lead first spinoff movie from the Scream franchise
I’ve written numerous times about why Stu could come back, why Stu SHOULD come back in the Scream franchise, not least of all because Scream VI actually stated that Stu might well still be alive, so I’m hear for his return, I know a lot of people might not like the idea but as someone who has been a massive fan of the franchise since the first movie came out, I will shout it from the rooftops if need be: Stu Macher is alive and he’s not done with Sidney Prescott yet…
Let’s hope we get that showdown next year.
Scream 7 is set to be released on February 27, 2026.
