In a very unexpected but of news, Columbia have announced that their Venom movie (long in gestation as it has been) is definitely happening and will arrive on October 5th, 2018.
This was unexpected as Sony are now working with Marvel to produce the MCU Spider-Man movies after the character was introduced in Captain America: Civil War last summer.
Venom is, of course, one of Spidey’s main villains and the movie, written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, will be produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Ghostbusters (2016) producer Amy Pascal.
Apparently the studio wants a new franchise built around Venom who is one of Marvel’s biggest antiheroes.
As for its place in regards to the MCU, there’s no word but we’re guessing that the lack of conformation likely means that while Marvel have Spider-man, this villain will likely not be part of the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We’ll keep you posted as we hear more but thoughts on a Venom franchise?
