When Joe Schreiber’s Star Wars novel Death Troopers hit in 2009, it took Star Wars on an exciting new trajectory and we may be heading back there soon.
Set just before A New Hope, the story saw Han and Chewie coming across a Star Destroyer full of undead Stormtroopers after the Empire had been messing with chemical weapons – remember in A New Hope when Han told Obi-Wan he’s seen ‘a lot of strange things’? Well, to this day, I like to think this adventure is one of them.
It really showed that in a galaxy as expansive as Star Wars, there are a million different types of stories to be told – a Friends-type tale set around a cantina? No problem! A starship full of undead Storm Troopers? Yup.
Shawn Levy and writer talk about Ryan Gosling Star Wars movie… coming sooner than we thought?
Since then, we have seen Star Wars touch on the horror element in The Clone Wars and, more recently, when the witches resurrected the dead Troopers in the Ahsoka series, but I still think there’s room for a proper scary story to be told in the Star Wars universe.
And Andor’s creator Tony Gilroy agrees, saying a few weeks ago: “I think we’ve made our lane with Andor, and Skeleton Crew was trying to do their own, too,” he says.
“I always fantasised that the show [Andor] would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie. I think the first thing I said to Kathy [Kennedy] when she said they wanted to open a line, was, ‘Could you do a courtroom drama?’ And why not? We’ve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and it’s up to other people now to find another way to do it.”
Now, he’s given a new interview and when pressed on the Star Wars horror story, he says that it’s happening.

“They’re doing that,” he says, adding, “I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.”
Referring to what comes next after Andor, Gilroy says he hopes he’s opened the door to a wider universe: “The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything. So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favor that we were given from ‘Mandalorian,’ and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool.”
Look, the truth is that Disney has done damage to the Star Wars brand and fans are turning away from it in droves, I don’t like writing that, it hurts, and, truth be told, I’ve enjoyed the majority of Disney’s output, but the fact is that, like their live-action remakes and now the MCU, Disney has run things straight into the ground and unless they can win fans back, the galaxy doesn’t look so bright.
Is a Star War horror movie or series the way to do it? I’ve no idea, I’d certainly be there for it first lift, and I can tell you one thing for sure, it would get people talking Star Wars.
Thoughts? I know you have them… I wanna hear ’em.
Andor season two starts on April 22nd.
