If, like us here are FTN HQ, you’re waiting on news of a Transformers: One sequel than we might have a bit of good news for you… but we’re not all the way there. Yet.
In a new interview, Hasbro Entertainment’s Oliver Dumont has been talking about many of their franchises and in among it all, Transformers comes up.
Speaking about Transformers: One, which is a great re-introduction the franchise and a very entertaining and criminally underlooked movie, Dumont seems hopeful about further adventures of the young Prime and Megatron, saying: “It is early days, but never too soon to think about what’s possible!”
Transformers: One director talks more movies, says there’s a lot of story still to tell…
Tantalisingly, he goes on: “In fact, coming off of Transformers: One, we have been exploring future projects with the film’s director, Josh Cooley. The Transformers franchise has such a rich history and passionate fandom, so there are so many facets that have yet to be explored in entertainment.”
If they are in discussions with Cooley, then it would make sense a sequel is being at least considered, especially since it was visualised as a trilogy to begin with, with Cooley saying recently: “There’s definitely more story to tell.
“We’re used to seeing the story begin once the planet’s dying and they leave for Earth, so there’s a whole war that happens once they break apart and once they leave the planet. So there’s a lot more story to tell there and it could be really fun.”
On the IP as a whole, Dumont goes on: “We’re always thinking of new ways to bring the Transformers franchise to life – expanding the Transformers universe through sensational touchpoints – whether that’s a movie, a comic or an animated series. Whatever the offering, we’re ensuring they’re grounded in our consumer insights and bringing branded experiences that our fans and families are avidly searching for. At the end of the day, I believe it’s that expectation that keeps the brand so exciting and sparks new interpretations for the big and small screens.”
Transformers One is a movie that deserves to be studied form a marketing perspective – the trailers were met with lukewarm reception and it’s not surprising as they did not at all reflect the movie that they were for, giving us what seemed as a childish comedy when in fact, while there is humour for sure, the movie itself looks at big themes and examines the tragedy of two friends who eventually become the leaders of two warring factions that whole the fate of the galaxy int heir hands… its fun but not funny.
This misjudged marketing no doubt resulted in the movie’s underwhelming performance in cinemas with the fans that went and critics alike almost universally loving it.
Let’s hope we get another visit to this Cybertron because I and many others want to see where it goes next.
