Transformers: One director talks more movies, says there’s a lot of story still to tell…

While we here in the UK are yet to see Transformers: One, we’re hearing nothing but great things but also that, sadly, it’s not delivering big money… yet.

Hopefully, the money thing will turn around because the plan was always to do a trilogy arc, telling the story of Optimus Prime and Megatron and now director Josh Cooley is starting to talk about where the story might go next and what attracted him in the first place.

“There’s definitely more story to tell,” Cooley says, “We’re used to seeing the story begin once the planet’s dying and they leave for Earth, so there’s a whole war that happens once they break apart and once they leave the planet. So there’s a lot more story to tell there and it could be really fun.”

On the relationship between Prime and Megatron – Orion Pax and D-16 at this stage in the story – Cooley goes on: “The thing that got me really interested in this was the idea that being a real tight relationship between the two characters and seeing that relationship fall.

“If you go Cain and Abel or ‘Ben Hur,’ Ten Commandments, it just has this epic, legendary tale to it and that would be very cool to ‘Transformers,’ to give more of an emotional connection.”

Cooley said he felt it was important to make them more than just the good and bad guy archetypes and he really wanted to “bring some real depth to their character and show why they were friends and why they fell apart — to have the audience really understand the situation, and not just because one’s good, one’s bad.”

While, as I said earlier, I haven’t seen the movie yet, I have no doubt that there’s a lot of legacy and history still to be covered in this story with the fall of Cybertron and the war that spans a galaxy all lying millions of years down the line, with that sort of set-up, mixed with a wealth of characters, planets and events, there’s really no limit to what comes next and if Transformers: One really is as good as I’m hearing, I’ll be here for it all, whatever it may be.
