Ok, with Dracula: Untold kicking off the Universal Monsters Shared Universe, it looks like these aren’t the scary monsters you’re looking for…
With famous monsters like Dracula, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein still to appear, it looks like Universal are thinking more along the lines of The Avengers than scarefests. Wut?
The Hollywood Reporter are saying that Universal Chairman Donna Langley believe that they must be competitive with Marvel and DC (?): “We have to mine our resources. We don’t have any capes (Dracula wears a cape, no?) but what we do have is an incredible legacy and history with the monster characters. We’ve tried over the years to make monster movies — unsuccessfully, actually. So, we took a good, hard look at it, and we settled upon an idea, which is to take it out of the horror genre, put it more in the action-adventure genre…”
She also said that, despite Dracula: Untold telling the origins of the character, the rest of the movies will be set in the present day.
The next Universal Monster movie will be the Mummy which will arrive in 2016.
