Finally! The trailer is here for Something in the Dirt, the new movie from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.
If you’re unfamiliar with the writing/directing/acting duo, you should get on Resolution, Spring, The Endless and Synchronic, the mind-bending cosmic horror movies the duo have brought us so far which are all part of one crazy/beautiful world into which Something in the Dirt now drops.
The movie, filmed during lockdowns, debuted at Sundance earlier this year and, until now, we’ve been pacing the floor to find out when (or where) we’d be able to see it and now we know it’s not that far away – November 4th – and best of all, it’s coming to cinemas.
This will be the first movie from the duo that I’ll get to see on the big screen, having discovered their earlier work – plus their wonderful short movies and movies like After Midnight and She Dies Tomorrow which I like to think are all part of the same twisted reality – during lockdown myself and becoming a little obsessed; I’ve recently bought all their movies on physical media so I can dive into their commentaries and extra goodies on the discs. This is a world I love and am excited to get back into.
Something in the dirt seems to be a mix of alien invasion and ghost story which the pair filmed in their apartments: “We wanted to make a film about what it would be like if two relatively intelligent and curious individuals encountered the supernatural, and instead of running away screaming decided to study it.
“That’s something that’s consistent in all of our movies. It’s the small target we’re always trying to hit — getting the audience the thrill of the feeling of unease and dread. This one probably has a much bigger dark-comedy component than the other four features. [But] they all deal to some extent with cosmic dread.”
I can’t wait to get in front of the big screen and bathe in the madness. November can’t come quick enough.
Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.
Something in the Dirt hits theaters on November 4, 2022.
