If you thought you knew the Spider-verse, think again as Sony’s next big Marvel-adjacent comic book movie is about to introduce us to Madame Web and a whole new team of Spider-powered heroes and heroines.
The first trailer for Madame Web has arrived and, well, it’s certainly a movie, but it’s hard to tell if it’s got the potential to be a good one given that it’s got one toe in the MCU but it more firmly set in the world of Venom and Morbius.
Featuring Cassandra Web, as a hero who has psychic abilities and is tied to the web of life which connects the Spider-verse, she’s definitely a potential character to bring the Sony characters into the MCU proper.
Lord and Miller say Spider-man: Beyond the Spider-verse will only be released when it’s ready
Web is played here by 50 Shades star Dakota Johnson and is joined by Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-woman after Jessica Drew, a variant of whom we met in Across the Spider-verse earlier this year. Next up we have Martha “Mattie” Franklin, the third Spider-woman who literally has spider-legs – in the comic this involved Doc Ock but I doubt that’ll be the case here; oh, and she’s related to J Jonah Jameson, so we might see more JK Simmons!
It seems that the big bad is Tahar Rahim’s Ezekial, who is basically a psychopathic version of Spider-man.
That’s a whole lot of web-slingers for one movie… let’s hope it’s more Spider-verse than Morbius.
There’s been rumours of Tom Holland’s Spider-man appearing, so it could be worth keeping an eye on this in the coming months.
“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.
Directed by: SJ Clarkson
