WATCH: Mike Myers teases Austin Powers’ return

Could we get getting a shagadelic return to the silver screen?

Mike Myers, the voice and face of characters such as Wayne’s World’s Wayne Campbell, Shrek, Dr Evil and, of course, Austin Powers, was asked recently if there’s a chance we’d see the woman-mad secret agent making a return and his answer was pretty positive that yes, we’ll see him again.

When asked is Power would return, the star, while looking like he wanted to say more, simply replied:  “I would be surprised if it didn’t.”

Of course, fans will know that the three movies in the series saw Myers play 1960s secret agent Austin Powers who was cryogenically frozen, waking up in 1997 where he brought his sensibilities – inappropriate language, a lot of sexual comments and, em, actions and really bad teeth. His series was a real fish-out-of-water tale that grew more and more over-the-top and flamboyant as it went on, but the first movie is still a wonderful study of how we changed over thirty years and how someone like Powers would adjust – or not – to survive in the modern world.

Ironically, the franchise made the dated attitudes and comments of the series somewhat cool and funny again as it became a global phenomenon.

Chris Morgan confirms he’s still writing another Hobbs and Shaw movie

Interestingly, we’re now roughly the same time away from first movie as it was from the period it itself was sending up – in other words, it was a 90s movie sending up the 60s, if he came back now, Austin could be a 90s character trying to survive in our insane world – if Myers played it right, he could potentially do it all again because the difference between the 90s and 2020s is one ripe for sending up and pointing and laughing at.

So yeah, bring Austin back and let’s do it all again. Baby.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
