One of my all-time favourite – but completely bat-sh@t crazy – movies, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is hitting the big screen again!
I still remember heading to the south of Ireland to see this as I was a bit, em, young and they were a bit, em, less strict at letting folks in down there. And I remember loving every second of it.
At the time, I was really into the art and craft of movie-making and Coppola deployed every bit of those in making this movie which just so happens to have Gary Oldman’s Dracula and Anthony Hopkins’ Van Helsing chewing – with great relish – every bit of the lavish scenery.
Honestly, I can’t believe it’s thirty years old but it’s an essential watch on the big screen if you can. Especially now that it’s in glorious 4k!
Adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic vampire novel. Gary Oldman plays Count Dracula, a 15th-century prince, who is condemned to live off the blood of the living for eternity. Young lawyer Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) is sent to Dracula’s castle to finalise a land deal, but when the Count sees a photo of Harker’s fiancée, Mina (Winona Ryder), the spitting image of his dead wife, he imprisons him and sets off for London to track her down.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins
Bram Stoker’s Dracula returns to UK cinemas from 7th October and in US cinemas on 23rd and 27th October at Fathom Events screenings
