We have heard for some time – since Pacific Rim first was a thing, actually – that the giant Jaegers might someday find themselves crossing into the universe of Legendary’s Monsterverse with Godzilla and King Kong, but it never happened. Or at least not yet.
In fact, as far back as 2017, before Pacific Rim: Uprising was released, director Steven DeKnight revealed that there were talks about seeing the two franchises meeting at some point (here), saying: “Look I think it would be fantastic to have the ‘Pacific Rim’ universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen.”
Now, there has been choppy waters since then; Pacific Rim: Uprising didn’t perform particularly well at the box office and even the Monsterverse movies, Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters never set the box-office alight the way many hoped… but there’s still Godzilla Vs Kong set for release next month, so they weren’t total flops either.
In fact, despite many saying both franchises are disappointments, we know that a Pacific Rim animated series, The Black, left, arrives next month (here) and a King Kong animated series set in the Monsterverse is on its way too (here), so the franchises are far, far from done yet…
This brings us back to DeKnight who once again is talking online about how the two universes could have come together at some stage: “That was actually my long term plan. PR3 [Pacific Rim 3] was structured to end in a way that married the two universes.”
This ties into what Pacific Rim creator Guillermo Del Toro said a few weeks ago when the new trailer for Godzilla Vs Kong dropped (here): “I personally love seeing the Neon, Sea battles, building demolition, etc because secretly -maybe- the PAC RIM Universe co-exists in the LEGENDARY Kaijuverse and, perhaps, one day they can rumble!”
Now, we know that Pacific Rim tells the story of giant monsters that come through a breach between universes, called The Breach, and devastate earth before making pulls together and build giant wat machines – the Jaegers – to stand up to them and push them back before they can destroy the earth.
And we know that the Monsterverse sees a world that was once home to giant creatures who ruled it before mankind came along and upset the balance and sees these creatures resurface to claim it back… so, it’s not as if these two worlds are the SAME world, but given that Pacific Rim is based around a rip between universes, then there’s no reason why they couldn’t come together and, since there’s a lot of talks that Godzilla Vs Kong will feature the debut of Mechagodzilla, then it could be argued this could, technically, be a Jaeger.
Pacific Rim: The Black will be seven 30 min episodes and arrives on Netflix on March 4th.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film arrives on March 26 in theaters and on HBO Max.

To clarify, my plan does not mean that’s what would have happened. It was just an idea. https://t.co/IgeIgwXedI
