Among all the confusion over the next evolution of the DCEU/DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s watchful eyes, there’s been a lot of confusion about who’s returning and who is not.
We know, of course that we have a new Superman and Supergirl but at the same time, it looks like John Cena’s Peacemaker and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller are safe and have a bright future but it seems that there’s at least one other big screen hero who is definitely safe.
Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña has spoken out again about his reappearance as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle: “I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever.

“Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon”
The Blue Beetle movie, which hit cinemas last August, was one of the last entries in the DCEU that was, which came to an end just before Christmas with the Aquaman sequel, but it caused a bit of confusion before its release, with it seemingly set to be the first movie in Gunn and Safran’s new universe.

At the time, director Angel Manuel Soto, said: “We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the DCU.”
James Gunn cleared the issue up, or maybe made it worse, by saying he and Safan’s vision for DC kicks off with the animated series Creature Commandos (which arrives this fall) and Superman: Legacy (July 2025) will be the first movie under the new leadership, Blue Beetle will be the start of the new universe, adding: “The first Dcu character for sure is Blue Beetle and the first full DCU movie is Superman.”
So Blue Beetle will be back and is the first DCU character. But wouldn’t that be the cast of Peacemaker? Oh, lordy.
Either way, while Blue Beetle was a so-so movie, I did enjoy Maridueña in the lead role, so I’d happily see him return down the line… I just worry about how confusing this is all getting.
