So, you may recall in July 2018 that we heard that a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series was in the works and, yay!, it wasn’t just another lazy reboot but rather was set in the same universe as the original series (here).
Now, aside from this being a tricky proposition given that, at the end of the original series, Buffy and the gang activated all the world’s Slayers. It will also be a tricky one given that we know how that all works out as Joss Whedon himself already created a sequel series in the comic book series Fray: The Vampire Slayer.
We know that creator Joss Whedon is executive producing the new series and it will be showrun by Alias screenwriter Monica Owusu-Breen.
Now one of the stars of the original series, Amber Benson, who played Tara, has chipped in on what she knows of the show.
“I was so excited because Joss [Whedon] was involved, a woman of colour was going to be running the show, and Buffy was going to be a woman of colour. I thought that was really important,” she said.
She went on to speak about the diversity of the original series and who she believed it was left lacking: “So, Buffy – it had some diversity. But I feel like it could have had more. And that was just the time. That sort of onus wasn’t on the creative world to show the world in a diverse way. I would very much like to see Buffy in a diverse world. I think it would be a really amazing thing.”
But since we know that it is the same universe, it’s not going to be Buffy – it will be another Slayer, but Buffy is and always will be Sarah Michelle Gellar. We also know that if it is set in the same world then some familiar faces will possibly return.
Benson herself is keen, it seems: “I would pop in for a little cameo. Heck yeah!”
That will be interesting given she died and was unable to return in the original series. Still, it’s Buffy – anything can happen, right?
Anyway, I understand that diversity is important but It’s worth pointing out that Buffy The Vampire Slayer has had at least two prominent Slayers played by black actresses in the past – Kendra and Nikki Wood – so fans will be well used to the idea.
Now, let’s focus on doing a good series. Buffy deserves it.
What say you all? Let me know, gang…
