I heard a while ago that Disney may be looking at ret-conning some of the mess that seems to have taken place between Star Wars Episode VI (Return of the Jedi) and Episode VII (The Force Awakens), especially around Luke Skywalker.
When we last met Luke in Return of the Jedi, he was hopeful and about to bring back the Jedi after redeeming his father and destroying Emperor Palpatine, saving the galaxy. When we met him in The Force Awakens/The Last Jedi he was a bitter, jaded old man who tried to kill his nephew and disappeared without explanation, leaving behind his sister and his best friends Han, Lando and Chewie.
While it’s hard to accept this as Luke (well, impossible (for many), actually), it might help if we see how or why Luke got like that. Sure, it was hinted at – vaguely – in the movies, but we need to see just how this hero was deconstructed so completely in 30 years.
Now, not for the first time, I’m hearing rumours that Luke may appear in The Mandalorian Season 3.
And, in all honesty, this would make sense for several reasons.
During the timeline of The Mandalorian Luke will still be the optimistic young Jedi, looking to return the Jedi to the universe and ensure peace and harmony. He would likely be travelling across the universe, looking for potentials and pupils – the possibility of him running into the Mandalorian isn’t only possible it would make sense.
Why? Well, at that time Luke will be looking for younglings so him seeking out the child is very possible and, on top of that, the Mandalorian is on a quest to return the child to his people and keep him safe, so seeking out a surviving Jedi (another interpretation of ‘his people’, perhaps?) would make sense and one who actually knew Yoda, another of the child’s species? Well, that just makes sense.
But the rumours don’t just end there.
I’m hearing that season 3 may introduce us to Mara Jade, the Emperor’s Hand, dark Force user and the woman who Luke falls in love with, saves and ultimately marries.
Jade was a massive character in what was once the EU, now Legends, and the fans are angry she has been erased in the movies altogether… so, with Disney looking to rectify the Star Wars brand, going back, using de-aging CGI, and telling the story of Luke and Mara Jade, the creation of the new Jedi academy makes sense.
The fact is that Disney+, with the rumoured Han Solo, Darth Maul and Lando Calrissian shows, along with possible Luke and Ahsoka Tano shows joining the already confirmed Cassian Andor series, has a cracking chance to right some of the wrongs the sequels did… remember how The Clone Wars series gave us the Anakin Skywalker many felt the prequels didn’t? Well, here we go.
So what do you think? Could we see Luke appear in The Mandalorian, even only briefly? And if we did, would you want a Luke series?
Let me know what you all think, gang.
