In December last year, I reported that Doctor Who, which returned for its 60th anniversary in late 2023, was facing the axe at the BBC after fans refused to show up to watch it, I reported that the decision would be held off until current Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, had his second season aired later this year.
Well, it now seems that this is the case and things aren’t looking too good for the once iconic sci-fi series, with The Sun reporting the show is ‘facing the axe’.
The report states that the show’s current era has had ‘abysmal’ viewing figures due to ‘shoehorning wokery into storylines’. Whether you believe ‘wokery’ is a real thing or not, there’s no denying that the latest incarnation of the decades-old series has had some of the worst writing ever to grace a TV show.
Russell T Davies doesn’t sound so sure Doctor Who will get a third series anymore
The report, from an ‘insider’ claims that Gatwa “doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him”.
The source says: “His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work.”
Interestingly, the report says that leadership on the current run is very poorly managed and “a lot of people who’ve been working on this show for years and now being cast aside due to poor leadership,” adding that it was “too caught up on an agenda rather than telling a story”.

However, for the sake of balance, the Daily Mirror says a BBC spokesperson said the show has not been shelved but did confirm that “the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs”.
As someone who would not consider either The Sun of The Mirror as a particularly reliable source, there’s no denying that Doctor Who has been in massive decline since Peter Capaldi departed in 2017 but, as a near life-long fan, I never thought it would become as bad as it has in recent years.
Thoughts? I know you have them…
