While it has always seemed that Fox wasn’t keen on bringing back the cult classic Firefly, it seems the new leadership has softened to the idea… shiny.
In 2017 the studio had said that with Joss Whedon being the busiest man in the movie-making world, they weren’t interested in returning to the good ship Serenity without him, but now it seems we may be looking at the possibility of a limited series or a tweaked return of Nathan Fillion’s Captain Mal and the gang.
Fox’s president of entertainment, Michael Thorn, riding high on the success of the return of The X-Files and others, had this to say: “I loved Firefly, personally, and I watched every episode. I didn’t work on it, but I loved the show. [The idea of a revival] had come up before, but we had The Orville on the air and it didn’t make sense for us to have, as a broadcast network who is very targeted, to have two space franchises on our air. But it’s a good idea.”
It’s interesting that he namedrops The Orville as being the reason that Firefly had been blocked as The Orville has now moved to the Hulu for season three… so, does that mean there’s now a space to bring one of favourite shows back?
Firefly executive producer Tim Minear, who is showruning 9-1-1 at Fox, had this to say: “[Joss and I] have talked about different permutations and how that might work.
“Do you take two of the characters and put them in a different place and sort of retell a new story with two old characters, with new characters?” Some of the characters might be harder to wrangle than others, considering the likes of Fillion are caught up leading new series of their own.
“You’re not gonna get everybody back — unless you did something like a limited series, like they did for The X-Files,” Minear said. “Then maybe you could get these people to come back. ‘Cause Nathan is a little busy doing The Rookie. But I also know, ’cause I just texted a little bit with Nathan over the weekend, when I posted those pictures from Firefly and he got very sentimental.”
“I would love to see, like, an eight- or ten-episode limited adventure in that universe.”
Personally, I would love to see the whole gang back for one final hurrah, but, in fairness, the movie Serenity did give the show a nice sense of closure and it would be better to go out on a high than to have it return and be a ghost of its former self… but it’s Firefly, and we here at FTN will carry its flag to the grave if there’s a chance of boarding that ship one more time.
What say you all?
