Could The Penguin, which, by the way, is superb, have revealed another major Batman villain on the sly?
So far in The Batman universe we’ve met Riddler, Joker, Catwoman and Penguin but is Scarecrow there too? In episode four of the series an eagle-eyed fan spotted a couple of very cool nods to Batman’s fearsome nemesis that honestly ties neatly into what we’re seeing on screen.
In The Penguin, Cristin Milioti’s Sofi Falcone is attending a psychiatrist called Julian, played by actor Theo Rossi and in the show, Sofia is in his office, which looks like this:
But on Julian’s desk are a couple of very interesting items that look a lot like Scarecrow’s glove and mask, see below, and over on Reddit, user BebehBokChoy had this to say:
“So, I was rewatching Cent’Anni (episode 4) and noticed some extremely interesting objects on Julian’s desk…
“These were NOT there in the first scene with Julian’s office (episode 2), where Sofia has a PTSD meltdown. In that episode, in order to ground her, he specifically tells her to look at the pictures on the wall and the objects on his desk. His desk is totally normal at that point.

“If you go and rewatch this scene in Cent’Anni, you’ll notice Sofia herself briefly checks out these objects as she walks around the room. And when she is going through his desk, if you look at where her sight line actually is, it’s on his desk, not in the drawer with the pills.
“Something interesting to note is that she’s not really supposed to be there in that episode; she’s only there as an accident/emergency. It seems plausible, plot-wise, that Julian didn’t have a chance to put these things away like he perhaps normally would if he knew someone else was going to be in his office. (EDIT: Then again, he is so manipulative, he might have left them there for her to see!)
“Just food for thought that I thought this sub might appreciate :)”
Now, there are a few rumours online that Rossi was hired early on in the show’s development to play Jonathan Crane – AKA Scarecrow – but was later changed to Julian; as I was watching the show I did remark to my wife that his character could very easily have been Crane and it seems I may have been right.
Second The Batman spinoff series beign developed… Harvey Dent to be focus?
The episode’s production designer Kalina Ivanov was asked about the link to Scarecrow and answered simply: “We left it open for interpretation.” And that’s fine but the fact that the glove and mask, which are very similar to those worn by the Arkham Games version of Scarecrow, are still on display and actually noticed by Sofia would imply that it’s not open to interpretation as much as setting something up down the line.
This reminds me of the whole Riddler is in the Dark Knight theory from back in the day – it’s an extension of lore for fans in so far as it’s not 100% confirmed but in your head-canon it can be true.
So, in my head-canon, Scarecrow is also in The Batman universe and I have a feeling it’ll be gloriously confirmed soon enough.
Thoughts? Let me hear them…
