Marc Guggenheim reveals Green Lantern design for John Diggle in Arrowverse that never happened

Over the years, the Arrowverse shows did many wonderful things, things that no TV universe – or movie universe for that matter – came close to. Aliens, superheroes, multiverses, all the greatness of the DC universe but one thing it never managed to do was get John Diggle, played by John Ramsey, to put on the Green Lantern suit despite managing to establish his name as actually being John Stewart and even having him finding the Lanterns’ Ring.

But it was the plan and, not only that, Arrowverse showrunner and creator Marc Guggenheim has revealed their design for the Arrowverse version of the iconic hero.

David Ramsey talks his future as Green Lantern in the Arrowverse… and it’s not what you’re thinking

“Unfortunately, we never got the approval to go full Green Lantern with Diggle,” Guggenheim says on his Substack, “but we were always trying to push the envelope as much as possible. For example, check out the proposed Season 8 costume for Dig that we weren’t able to slip past the powers that be.”

Ramsey himself, back in 2019, said: “We’ve been talking about that ring since Season 1.

“I always loved the idea of being able to jump into the John Stewart mythos, obviously, but I also loved the idea that we were creating something that didn’t exist before. John Diggle never existed before. We created this character, Spartan, that never existed in the comics or in any other universe, and now it’s part of the comics. So that was always something and continues to be something I’m really proud of.

David Ramsey to lead new Arrowverse show… but not a Green Lantern one?!

“But who can resist playing the Green Lantern? So yeah, was I excited when I saw that? Without a doubt. Will it ever happen? Who knows…”

Sadly, the Arrowverse shows – Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and more – have all come to an end but at one stage Diggle was set to get his own show but not as Green Lantern but rather as Spartan, the hero he played in Arrow. Sadly, it never happened but it’s nice to know that the Arrowverse was at least trying to have Green Lantern Corps, even if it seems it was one thing (along with using Batman) that they could never do.

Thoughts on this one?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
