Now that we know Jodie Whittaker is stepping down as The Doctor after the upcoming series 13 of Doctor Who (here), we’re all wondering who will step into the role next.
We had the story a few weeks back that It’s a Sin’s Olly Alexander was rumoured to have nabbed the role (here) but that soon fizzled out and we’re all left wondering who’s next to step into the time and space travelling blue box.
Now, personally, I can’t see The BBC hiring another white male to play the role after Whittaker and I’d imagine it’ll be another couple of regenerations before that happens again… no matter what the fans want. What do they know?
Anyway…
Despite all that, Radio Times has carried out a survey among Whovians, asking which actor they would most like to see playing the next generation and to the surprise of no one, Good Omens and Staged star Michael Sheen is the man the fans want.
And with good reason – he’s the perfect all-rounder for the role; Sheen is a chameleon of an actor and carries humour and drama effortlessly – plus, he’s a good mate of David Tennant, so he’s steeped in Who.
However, Sheen didn’t get ALL the votes, as 15% of them went to The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade, left. Personally, I love Ayoade but, for my money, The IT Crowd’s Matt Berry would be a great choice for The Doctor.
But that’s just my opinion.
Holby City’s Jo Martin, who popped up last season as a forgotten incarnation of The Doctor, also grabbed some of the votes to take over the role in the next series.
The full list of votes looked like this:
Michael Sheen – 20 per cent
Richard Ayoade – 15 per cent
Jo Martin – 11 per cent
Andrew Scott – seven per cent
Colin Morgan – six per cent
Alexander Vlahos – six per cent
Ben Whishaw – five per cent
Olly Alexander – four per cent
Jonny Lee Miller – three per cent
Kelly Macdonald – two per cent
Anyway, that’s the poll… who is your choice for the role (hint: anyone except Sheen is the wrong answer)? I want to hear it all…
