Following last month’s announcement that Netflix had officially greenlit the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series from Sony Pictures Animation, today’s news classifies the show as part of Sony’s wide array of kids’ programming, writes our good friend Jason at GB News.
In a new interview with License Global, Jamie Stevens, executive vice president of global consumer products and licensing at Sony Pictures Entertainment, discussed several Sony properties, including Ghostbusters, mentioning the anticipated animated series within discussion of youth-focused television, saying:
“One of our most exciting ventures is our kids’ programming, punctuated by the upcoming second season return of the hit preschool series, ‘The Creature Cases,’ produced by Sony Pictures Television – Kids for Netflix, along with Season 2 of ‘Goosebumps’ on Disney+ and an upcoming ‘Ghostbusters’ animated series, which is being produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix.”
Ghostbusters animated series [finally] officially going ahead at Netflix
Having the upcoming series considered for kids shouldn’t be all too surprising, especially since, aside from the first film’s sexual undertones and a few jump scares, the franchise—particularly in recent sequels—has continued to keep younger fans in mind. Additionally, both The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters were aimed at children while still managing to delve into darker storylines and create nightmare-inducing characters like the Boogieman and Samhain.
As reported last month, longtime Daily Show with Jon Stewart writer Elliott Kalan has been tapped as the series’ writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Also attached is the Ghostbusters filmmaking duo of Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, previously confirmed as producers.
Back in March, in promoting Frozen Empire, Kenan shared an update on the series, assuring that it was still very much in full development, saying:
“I just watched an entire art presentation for the show. I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call full development. Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.”
