Sarah Michelle Gellar close to signing on for Buffy return!

We might not be surprised by the news but we are elated to hear that Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to the role that made her a household name… Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In recent years the actress, who had previously been outspoken about not wanting to return to the role, has been quite outspoken about coming back, seemingly spurred on by her current role in Dexter: Original Sin as well as the popularity in recent years of franchises such as Scream and Halloween and now it’s been revealed that she is in discussions to come back at Hulu with a Pilot almost ordered.

The apocalypse is coming… beep her!

Word is, as expected, that Gellar and Buffy will not lead the series but will rather be a mentor who will have a semi-regular role, while the role of Vampire Slayer falls to a new character.

There’s no word yet on whether or not any of her co-stars in the classic 90s show will be returning but if it picks up where the series and comics left off, I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a host of familiar faces returning.

The pilot will be directed by The Eternals’ Chloe Zao and penned by Nora and Lila Zuckerman, the series will be executive produced by (among others) Gellar and Dolly Parton (through her production house, Sandollar).

Fans of the original series will know that, at the end of the story, Buffy and her friends had managed to break a tradition as old as time, meaning that the world didn’t just have one Slayer – a super-powered heroine to save all of humanity, given a sacred duty to do so – but it saw all potential Slayers ‘activated’, meaning that the world was safe with an army of slayers all over the globe.

However, in the official canon, we know that in the far future, there is a slayer called Fray and she seems to be a lone warrior, meaning that somewhere along the line, the activation was made redundant and the world went back to tradition.

I’m a big fan of Buffy, as is everyone I know, including my kids, so this is news that is warmly welcomed, although Buffy was a breaker of norms, a character almost unique in her day, a woman stronger than anyone who was believable because it was well written and well made… let’s hope they manage to keep that tradition alive for this.

Thoughts on the return of Buffy?  I wanna hear them.
