I reported a few nights ago that Sarah Michelle Gellar is planning a return as iconic hero, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and now the actress finally speaks about it herself.
Taking to social media, Gellar revealed that the discussions have been going on for three years and while she was at first reluctant, she came on board after chatting to Chloé Zhao (potential director of the show) and Gail Berman (producer on the original series) and is now fully invested, providing the show honours and does justice to what went before.
Gellar’s statement:
So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me.
Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential “Buffy” revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again. We’d always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.
While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea.
Audible brings back Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars for new adventure
I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit “Buffy” and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.
I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love “Buffy” as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.
In a new interview, Gellar was pressed on the possibility of some of her cast members returning and it seems to be something that is at the very least, being discussed: “I will tell you that they are all aware, I speak to them all anyway, this is all really, really early…”
She goes on: “Ultimately, obviously, it’s something we really, really want to do, it’s also about setting up the world and, you know, again. It’s so premature, so it’s hard to say anything.”
Angel star David Boreanaz took to social media to congratulate Gellar but it also seems to be saying that he isn’t going to be one of the potential ones involved: “Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans. God Speed.”
Sarah Michelle Gellar talks Buffy return: “If people think I can still kick butt”
Buffy was an iconic show, hero and story in the 90s and 2000s and has endured ever since – I watched the series in recent years with my kids and they’re both looking forward to the reboot but also worried that the show will be written like most modern shows ie badly – so bringing her back seemed like a given, however, Gellar and other cast members have always been reluctant and then there’s the whole thing with creator Joss Whedon (Google it) but honestly, if Geller is game now, I would be hopeful that she seems something in the show and that she would ensure it was done right.
I have my doubts but as the old saying goes, hope springs eternal.
Thoughts? I know you have them…
