Star says DCU Blue Beetle animated series aiming for release next year

After the success of the superb Creature Commandos, it looks like Blue Beetle could be the DCU’s next big animated star.

At the recent Saturn Awards Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña, who played Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in the 2023 live-action DC movie, gave an update on the animated series which is in development and will bring the character into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.

James Gunn announces Creature Commandos season two

The young star said they are “hitting hard” the animated show, adding that the goal is to have the show wrapped this year and on screens in 2026.

Looking beyond that, Maridueña was asked if he’s going to be putting the suit on for a live-action return and he admits he has no idea what Gunn’s plans are: “I’m just happy to have done this first one and I’ll continue to spread the word about that while we get the second one drafted up.”

While I didn’t enjoy Blue Beetle as much as I had expected, there’s a lot of potential in there, especially if the rumoured plans to bring Booster Gold into the DCU are true and while we know Gunn is currently prepping Creature Commandos season 2, if Maridueña is right about the 2026 release, Blue Beetle could well be the next animated project for the DCU, meaning it will be out after Superman and possibly around the same time as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow which is currently filming.

Whatever happens, there’s a lot of promising irons in the fire for the DCU and it’s exciting to see what comes next.

Thoughts? I know you have ’em, true believers, so let me know.
