While it was first announced two years ago, we finally have new details and a title for the first Stranger Things animated series.
Called Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, the show will be produced by original Stranger Things creators the Duffer brothers along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen on behalf of 21 Laps.
The Stranger Things universe is expanding, with Netflix announcing a brand-new animated spin-off for 2023, set in the world of one of its biggest shows, in April. Now, two years later, the official title has been revealed: Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.
In an official statement, the Duffers said: “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling.

“We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
The brothers have previously said that, just as the story is set in the 1980s, so too shall the series harken back to the golden age of animated series: “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling.”
Fanboy and Chum Chum creator Eric Robles will showrun the series and has shared a picture of the cover of the first script, left, writing: “Stranger Things fans, do you copy? We have ourselves a series title.”
The Duffer brothers have previously said that the series will be standalone and while connected to the Stranger Things series and will connect to it, it will not be necessary to have viewed it to still enjoy.
Aside from comics, this is the second official Stranger Things spinoff, with The First Shadow stage show dominating London’s West End and recently heading stateside.
The news comes as we all wait patiently for the fifth and final series of Stranger Things this summer.
It’s likely we’ll get our first look at the series after the Annecy International Animation Film Festival between 8-14th June.
A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana. After a boy vanishes into thin air, his close-knit group of friends and family search for answers and are pulled into a high-stakes and deadly series of events. Beneath the surface of their ordinary town lurks an extraordinary supernatural mystery, along with top-secret government experiments and a dangerous gateway that connects our world to a powerful yet sinister realm. Friendships will be tested and lives will be altered as what they discover will change Hawkins and possibly the world — forever.
Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in July 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular television series ever with its fourth season alone amassing over 140.7 Million views globally. Season 5 was announced as the final season of Stranger Things with additional projects in the universe in the works, including: Stranger Things: The First Shadow live on stage in London’s West End and coming to Broadway in 2025, along with an untitled animated spinoff series.
