Trinity Killer prequel Dexter spin-off ‘written and ready to go’ – John Lithgow to return

Well, we’re currently living in the golden age of Dexter it seems, as prequel series Dexter: Origins is currently enjoying high ratings and reviews on Showtime and we’re looking forward to Dexter: Resurrections which is set to begin filming next month and will see Micheal C Hall return as Dexter once more.

But it seems that the show’s first – technically – actual spinoff, based on the Trinity Killer, is getting ready to go in front of the cameras at Paramount+ and Showtime.

The series will focus on a young Arthur Mitchell AKA the Trinity Killer, played by the great John Lithgow in Dexter season 4 and will tell how he came to be the deadliest enemy Dexter Morgan ever crossed paths with.

The show comes from writer Scott Reynolds and Clyde Phillips, showrunner on Dexter seasons 1-4, New Blood and Original Sin, and is written and ready to go.

“We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series. At the moment, it is on the back burner,” Phillips says of the project before (exciting!) adding that: “John Lithgow has agreed to be the voice of his younger self, the way Michael Hall is doing for [Original Sin].”

It’s very likely that Showtime are waiting to see how the latest Dexter series, Original Sin, is being received – -e how it’s doing, financially – before moving ahead with the trinity show but I, for one, would very much like to see a series ser in the Dexter world but not tied to Dexter Morgan himself and we know from Dexter season 4 that Trinity had a prolific career before meeting Dexter’s scalpel.

On the potential series, Dexter Daily writes: Arthur’s childhood was marked by tragedy. He accidentally caused the death of his sister, Vera, after startling her in the shower, which led to her fatal fall through the glass door. The family’s devastation spiraled into further darkness—his mother committed suicide, and his father became an abusive alcoholic. These traumatic events inspired Arthur’s infamous murder rituals, which often mirrored his early life.

A potential Trinity Killer prequel would delve deeper into Arthur’s psychological descent, offering a dramatic exploration of how he became the man viewers met in Dexter. The series aims to humanize Arthur—not to excuse his actions, but to provide a chilling, psychological profile of a killer’s journey to darkness.

If done right, this could be a seriously dark and thrilling story and, while Dexter has its flaws (in every incarnation), when it’s good, it’s utterly superb.

Would you like to see a Trinity series? I know you have thoughts, guys, let’s hear them.
