At this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Netflix revealed new details about Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, a brand-new animated spin-off set between Seasons 2 and 3 of the hit live-action series, writes Jason at Ghostbusters News.
During a packed panel presentation, executive producer and showrunner Eric Robles shared that while the project draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Masters of the Universe, Scooby-Doo, and Dungeons & Dragons, the creative team’s “north star” throughout development was The Real Ghostbusters. “It was silly but had a handful of dark, creepy episodes and we just kept talking about that,” Robles said. “That became the north star for us.”

Visually, the series will lean into a style inspired by modern animated hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Arcane, with creature designer Carlos Huante (Alien vs. Predator, Men in Black) helping to bring new monsters to life, which include pumpkin zombies and a snow shark.
Animation is being handled by Flying Bark Productions, the Australia-based studio known for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel’s What If…?. Notably, Flying Bark is also the same studio currently working on Netflix and Sony’s upcoming Ghostbusters animated series.
While no exact premiere date has been announced, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is expected to debut sometime in 2026, following the final season of the live-action series, which will roll out in three parts later this year, beginning November 26, continuing on Christmas Day, and concluding with the finale on New Year’s Eve.

As part of Annecy’s industry-only Studio Focus session, Netflix is also expected to spotlight the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series. However, if any early previews are shown, they won’t be available to the general public, so we wouldn’t recommend holding your breath for major reveals just yet.
First announced as a collaboration between Sony Pictures Animation, Ghost Corps, and Netflix, the new Ghostbusters series will explore an uncharted era in the franchise’s history. Executive producers include Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire filmmakers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, with Elliott Kalan (Mystery Science Theater 3000) serving as writer, showrunner, and fellow EP.
