At New York Comic Con this weekend, James Gunn took to the stage to drop a new trailer for Creature Commandos but also to reveal details about the future of DC on screen and there’s some great stuff to get through, so strap in.

Speaking about the overall feel of the DCU, Gunn wanted to make it clear that while interconnected, each story and event will have its own feel: “It’s a connected universe but we’re not imposing any overall aesthetic.”

Interestingly, he also revealed that he was already developing Creature Commandos before he even got the gig overseeing the DCU with Peter Safran: “It was written when I started as the CEO of DC Studios. I had talked to Max about creating something after Peacemaker did so well. I talked to Peter Girardi about creating an animated series. I like the Creature Commandos. I love monsters. I love Frankenstein, the story of Bride of Frankenstein. It seemed like the perfect thing to do,” he said.

Looks like the DCU has cast its Hal Jordan/Green Lantern

“I wrote the scripts without a deal. then I happened to get hired instead of DC studios, and I very graciously. Thank you, self.”

Gunn once again spoke to his desire to cast actors who could play the characters in live-action as well as voice them in video games, animated shows etc, speaking of Frank Grillos’ Rick Flag snr, who leads the Creature Commandos in the upcoming animated series, he says: “Flag appears in Superman, he’s a major character in Peacemaker season two. We wanted to cast people who could play those characters live-action — at least for the major characters.”

Speaking to Creature Commandos again, he is aware of the comparisons with his other comic-book franchises including Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy: “This is kind of like Guardians of the Galaxy with the sentimentality stripped back.

James Gunn shares first gorgeous look at DCU’s Superman and Krypto

“The characters aren’t all perfect, and the stories aren’t perfect, and characters die, and it isn’t always for a purpose, like when Yan dies at the end of Guardians 2. Sometimes it’s just a tragic circumstance. It’s a darker story than that in a lot of ways, but hopefully equally invigorated.”

He also spoke about one episode in particular that is far from the happy-go-lucky of Guardians: “I was like ‘I think this is the saddest thing I’ve ever written in my entire life, it is really heartbreaking’. I could feel it in my bones how sad it was.”

But what about the future of the DCU after Superman and Creature Commandos? Well…

On Supergirl, he said: “[Writer] Anna [Nogueira] came in, and she pitched the story to me of Supergirl, and it was just one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard, and she immediately wrote it. She came in with the first draft that was great, and it’s just gotten better and better. Then [director] Craig [Gillespie] has been incredibly easy to work with, and I can’t wait for that to come out.”

With the recent casting of Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Gunn opened up a bit about the highly anticipated Lanterns series: “When we first started the DCU, the first couple of weeks of heading this out, we got together with a group of writers, and Tom King was one of those writers, and we were in this room, and we came up with sort of this concept for Lanterns. It’s a much more it’s a very grounded series, a very real series, which is a strange thing to say about a Green Lanterns show. But it’s going to be something like nobody’s ever seen before.”

The DCU kicks off properly in December with Creature Commandos and it’s going to be flat out after that… we cannot wait!
