Into every generation, the Slayer is born…
Say hello to the new Chosen One as Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire reboot/sequel series has found its new Slayer in the form of Skelton Crew’s Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The young actress, last seen in the Star Wars series as the gang leader, Fern, was announced as getting the role by Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Geller, on an Instagram post, below.
“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” Gellar said, “to have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
The pilot will be directed by The Eternals’ Chloe Zao and penned by Nora and Lila Zuckerman, the series will be executive produced by (among others) Gellar and Dolly Parton (through her production house, Sandollar).
Fans of the original series will know that, at the end of the story, Buffy and her friends had managed to break a tradition as old as time, meaning that the world didn’t just have one Slayer – a super-powered heroine to save all of humanity, given a sacred duty to do so – but it saw all potential Slayers ‘activated’, meaning that the world was safe with an army of slayers all over the globe.
However, in the official canon, we know that in the far future, there is a slayer called Fray and she seems to be a lone warrior, meaning that somewhere along the line, the activation was made redundant and the world went back to tradition, which is why we have a Chosen One again.
Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms Buffy will still be ‘slaying’ in new series
I’m a big, big fan of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and it’s spinoff series, Angel, so having Gellar back and not just doing a full reboot was the first right step, so I am pretty excited for this. Also, Armstrong was solid in Skeleton Crew, so she’s certainly not a bad shout for the role and at 15, she’s going to be the age Buffy was supposed to be in season one (although Gellar was 19), so all the signs are pointing to this being done right so far.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t suffer the way so many of our favourite franchises have in recent years.
Thoughts? You have ’em and I wanna hear them…
