Going back as far as 2017 (here), we knew that Donald Glover, he of Childish Gambino, Lando Calrissian and Community fame, was developing an animated Deadpool series for FX, who, at the time were also working on various X-Men related shows such as Legion and The Gifted, before plans fell through.
FX said at the time that they “will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”
However, it later emerged that it was Marvel that pulled the plug on the project (here), presumably because wheels were already turning on bringing Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds, who played him on the big screen, into the MCU post-20th Century Fox buy-out (here).
In 2018 FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed that Marvel pulled the plug on the series, saying: “They [Marvel] didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them as did Donald and Stephen. Now it’s totally up to them whether they hire someone else to do a different show.”
Since then Deadpool almost appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (here) and was technically already welcome into the MCU in a fun little clip where he appeared with Thor: Ragnorok’s Korg, played by Taika Waititi (above) but still no development on a Deadpool animated series.
Until now, when the rest footage, complete with Ryan Reynolds’ voiceover has appeared and, in a world where DC’s Harley Quinn animated series on HBO Max has just had a spinoff series announced (here), it seems to us here at FTN that a Deadpool r-rated animated series would be a winner for Marvel and Disney+ as the footage below is great fun and has really left us wanting more.
Indeed, just last year (here) a rumour appeared that Hulu may be developing a Deadpool animated show with Reynolds voicing the Merc with the Mouth but since Disney just canceled Hulu’s MODOK series (here) after one season, we’re not too sure this is a thing anymore.
So, now that the footage, below, has leaked, you never know what it might lead to… after all, Deadpool and leaked footage have a good history together (here) ;0)
