Jupiter’s Legacy
Written by Mark Millar
Art by Frank Quitely
You know you’re in for a treat when you see Mark Millar’s and Frank Quitely’s names on a comic book and this is no exception.
There’s an argument to be made for Millar being the greatest living comic book writer and there’s nothing here to suggest that his star is on the wane.
The story from the man who gave us Kick Ass and The Secret Service, not to mention American Jesus or his work on Ultimate X-Men and Fantastic Four, centres on the children of established superheroes.
Instead of living up to the ludicrously high expectations, they are something of a let down to their families.
There are more than a few comparisons to be made between these listless offfspring of famous parents, using what little celebrity they vicariously gained to party and get laid, and the likes of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.
If that wasn’t enough, like the best fiction, Millar is more than happy to hold up a mirror at larger society by showing a world that’s been ravaged by greed and corruption with the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer.
The people are so down, and in need of some respite, that they get behind a less than idyllic regime that promises the earth with terrible consequences. It’s not all making allegorical statements about the world we live in. Jupiter’s Legacy moves at a speed that would put most summer blockbusters to shame and the sheer scale of the spectacle is second to none helped in no small way by Quitely’s jaw dropping art.
This graphic novel collects the first five issues and if this any indication we are looking at another MIllar classic.
