Every Japanimaton fan’s inner teenager can start squeeing in delight – Dragon Ball is returning!

It’s been 18 years since a Dragon Ball anime series graced TV screens. In that time, we’ve had two TV specials, two cinematic releases, the ongoing Kai slimmed-down series that eliminated much of the maligned filler material from Dragon Ball Z. But that’s about to change.

After a special screening of the new feature film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, Toei Animation confirmed that a new animated Dragon Ball series is set to begin broadcasting this summer in Japan. Details are sketchy at this stage, with not eventhe name of the show being announced. We only know that the series will see creator Akira Toriyama providing creatie direction, feature original voice actors from the three previous Dragon Ball TV series’s (including 78-year-old Masako Nozawa, eternal voice of Son Goku and sons) and be set somewhere after the end of the Buu Saga, the last storyline of the Dragon Ball manga. Exactly when it’s set, and whether derided spin-off Dragon Ball GT will just be consigned to the dustbin of non-canon alongside the Star Wars Holiday Special and 1965 Doctor Who Chrstmas special ‘The Feast of Stephen’, isn’t yet clear.

More news as and when we know. In the meantime, I’ll be dusting off classic PS2 beat-em-up Budokai 3 to get in the mood…

Throw the usual assortment of Saturday morning cartoons into the mix and we have something quite exceptional: someone with an encyclopaedic knowledge of utter tosh; a love of giant robots and spaceships fighting; and the strange desire to leap tall buildings in a single bound while wearing his underpants over his trousers. The death ray is currently in the works and one day you shall all bow to him, his giant space station and fleet of funky orange space shuttles...
