After the news a couple of days ago that Marvel Studios now answers only to Disney (here) we weren’t expecting more change… but we’re getting them.
It seems that the Marvel Creative Committee has been completed removed from Marvel’s movies (although it still exists for their TV department, oddly).
The committee had some big names in the toy and comics industry including Toy Biz’s Alan Fine, Marvel comic writer Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Buckley, publisher of Marvel Comics, and Joe Quesada, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics and the current Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Enterprises an it was their job to read scripts and offer notes, ideas, changes etc as the movie went through the stages of production.
The source of the news at BirthsMoviesDeath, wrote: “One Marvel creative talked to me about battles with the Creative Committee where they focused on details of nit-picky science that ignored the general tone of the script itself. The notes that drove Edgar Wright off Ant-Man came from the Creative Committee. What’s more, the Creative Committee was often very tardy with their notes, making movie development a much slower process. All of the Committee members have other, very important jobs, so you understand why that would be the case, but it was a pain for filmmakers. And that’s before taking into account the political divisions within Marvel that also created friction with the Creative Committee.”
It is expected that this will be a new beginning at Marvel; one that won’t be seen until after Civil War and Dr Strange (as they are both well into production) and will mean that Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Victoria Alonso will command the ship from here on in.
While we are big fans of marvel’s output here at FTN, we have recently feared that a certain staleness was beginning to set in and perhaps this is part of the reason these changes have been happening… if this is th case – and even if it isn’t – we’re hopeful about what it will mean for the MCU from here on.
