Right. Fox has announced that it has cast its Frank-N-Furter for the upcoming TV movie remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Allegedly being done for the film’s 40th anniversary, the two-hour TV special will see Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox take on the role of mad scientist Frank, the sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania made famous by Tim Curry in both the Picture Show and the original run of the stage show.
The special is expected to screen in autumn 2016, only one year late for the 40th anniversary of the original. It will be directed, executive produced and choreographed by Kenny Ortega of High School Musical ‘fame’. Ortega will act as exec producer alongside Gail Berman and Lou Adler, who produced the original Picture Show, and will be a joint production by Fox 21 Television and Berman’s The Jackal Group.
Look, aside from my well-known animosity to Hollywood’s never-ending round of remakes, you just know that this is going to be a bad idea. Fox today isn’t the same company that distributed the original Picture Show in 1975. The fact that they previously offered the part to Lady Gaga just goes to show how bad this is going to be. Please, just no.
