We’ve been wondering about what path David Ayer will go down in his hugely-anticipated Suicide Squad film and although the cast and crew have admirably been keeping their cards close to their chest so far, we have received one of the most intriguing teasers yet, centring on the relationship of The Joker and Harley Quinn.
Fresh details have emerged from the set of Warner Bros’ movie, with The Joker, Harley Quinn and Deadshot reportedly in a “ragged romantic triangle”.
Played by Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Will Smith respectively, the three characters are part of a dangerous mission to foil an even greater evil than themselves.
Speaking to Empire magazine as part of their upcoming issue, Smith revealed the trio’s uncomfortable social situation: “Harley is the biggest troublemaker, but Deadshot’s actually eyeballing her a little bit,” he said. “There’s a pretty ragged romantic triangle there.
“As the movie opens, [Deadshot] has a really big career score. He’s looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in [prison] Belle Reve for life.”
As for what’s going on with Robbie’s Harley Quinn – Joker’s psychotherapist-turned-baseball-bat-wielding-maniac – director David Ayer has more details: “[Harley’s story] is about her breaking free of The Joker and becoming this fully actualised, independent person,” said Ayer. “That really is a metaphor for everyone’s journey here.”
