As Star Wars fever begins to hit an all-time high with fans old and new anticipating something special from The Force Awakens, has J.J. Abrams managed to capture the magic of the originals or are we all too quickly forgetting the bitter taste of the prequels?
The comparisons are easy to see between A New Hope and The Force Awakens in particular, and what Abrams is obviously trying to do here is to draw a distinction for fans of the originals so that his universe feels familiar yet feels fresh, the only possible draw back being just how much creative freedom the “House of Mouse” allowed him.
Are they actively trying to create too many similarities (and possibly plot points)? Fans have been very actively putting out their own theories and ideas about what to expect, so will the film still manage to hold any surprises for the savvy among us?
Only time will tell, though Abrams seems to have created a balance of bringing together the elements that worked best from both the original and prequel trilogies, The Force Awakens has a lot of pressure to ensure fans of all generations are captivated enough to want to return and see another two films.
Let’s hope that this isn’t like another space franchise that crashed and burned from trying too hard to tell stories of old whist pleasing fans of the new!
