What would be the biggest cinematic crossover of all time? Yep, you guessed it, Star Wars and The Avengers. While there are endless problems with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes teaming up with the Jedi from a Galaxy Far, Far Away, it’s possibly the most exciting fanboy dream that could be put on the big screen (sorry Batman v Superman fans).
Stan Lee, who created The Avengers, spoke of the possibility of a crossover happening and some very interesting comments which makes one wonder how it would go: “Obviously the people who produce these [movies] are looking to be as successful as possible,” Lee told The Big Issue (via Squareeyed). “If they feel that incorporating Star Wars with the Marvel characters will be very successful, they’ll find a way to do it. Can you imagine Spider-Man saying, ‘May the force be with you’? It may come to that!”
“I created the Avengers by taking many of our characters and making a team out of them,” Lee says. “We can have as many characters join the Avengers as we want to for future movies. That might be fun, all of a sudden Luke Skywalker is an Avenger!”
Disney does own the cinematic rights to both Star Wars and Marvel Studios properties, so it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility from a legal standpoint. However, and this is the kicker, Lee doesn’t call the shots — that job is down to Kevin Feige and Kathleen Kennedy, the presidents of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm respectively.
While we don’t have any idea of how those two powerful individuals regard such a crossover, it’s almost certainly a massive NO. It would take a near-miracle to make such a film work and whoever directed it would risk incurring the wrath of two of the most vociferous sets of fanboys on the planet. Even still, it’s exciting that Lee has even got the ball rolling by mentioning it.
The next Star Wars film, Rogue One, hits cinemas on December 16, while Marvel’s next superhero adventure flies onto our screens in the form of Captain America: Civil War on May 6.
