The influence of Ben Affleck on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice can not be discounted. Not only is he the film’s star, debuting as the Caped Crusader, he also brings considerable directing experience, having scooped an Oscar for Argo.
While promoting Dawn of Justice, Affleck was asked about recent rumours that he was involved in fixing the script for Batman v Superman. Reports emerged a few weeks back suggesting that Affleck sat around in his Batman costume doing several rewrites of the script while production was already underway, write Comicbook, via Squareeyed.
Affleck’s response was blunt: “That is the dumbest rumour. I just like how if I was gonna go write, I would put on this bat suit first because it’s so comfortable to write in. I didn’t rewrite anything in any outfit, my underwear or otherwise.”
Affleck also spoke about recent criticism of the superhero movie genre from The Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who compared them to “cultural genocide.” Affleck said he valued the filmmaker’s opinion but disagreed on the cultural impact of superhero movies.
“I know Alejandro and he’s a great guy and a brilliant filmmaker and I admire him enormously. And [Emmanuel Lubezki, The Revenant’s cinematographer] is a friend of mine. Alejandro is also given to over-statement. I wouldn’t call it cultural genocide, but he’s brilliant and his point is taken that you can’t just swallow up cinema with any kind of movie,” Affleck said rather diplomatically.
Affleck will bow as Bruce Wayne this Friday when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is released in cinemas.
