When TV shows get the remake treatment you’d hope that, not only do they keep to the ideas of the original, but also adapt themselves to the ideas of the time they are now shown. Well fans of Xena will finally get that experience with the new series by NBC.
THR reports that Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who is writer of the new series, is set to explore the romantic relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. The original series, which first aired back in 1995, also explored this topic.
The cultural ideas at the time didn’t allow there to be anywhere near the same level of homosexual romance we accept today. As such the ‘relationship’ between the two was implied and subtle, more like a sisterly love than anything. It’s not to clear from this information however if Xena or Gabrielle will be lesbian or bisexual. However, this doesn’t actually matter.
The new series will hopefully live up to the success of the original, while also bringing it more inline with the ideas we hold today.
