Aw, man…
We were really starting to get excited for Rick Famuyiwa’s take of The Flash and then this happens.
Dope director Famuyiwa has left the movie which was set to begin filming early next year over that old creative differences thing.
He is the second director to have left the movie after Seth Grahame-Smith’s departure earlier this year (here).
Variety broke the news a short while ago and DC decline to comment, Famuyiwa made the following comment: “When I was approached by Warner Bros and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day. I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor.
“I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor, and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Brothers, DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”
The movie was already well into pre-production with cameras set for next year and an impressive cast already assembled including Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup.
It’s also well worth noting that by the time the movie would have hit on March 16th, 2018, The Flash would have been in (at least) three DC/Warners movies, having already appeared in Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad and having been part of next year’s Justice League.
While we have no idea why this has happened, we have to imagine that of all the DC Characters heading to (or already on) the big screen, Flash would be the toughest to imagine as the TV series has already given the world a great interpretation of the character and we’ve seen a similar speedster, Quicksilver, already realised fantastically in two X-Men movies and even the Avengers: Age of Ultron version wasn’t too shabby.
Whatever the reason, we wouldn’t rule out some possible delays on the movie’s release and production down the line.
More as we get it folks…
