We finally have our first official image from Sony’s Venom movie!
Yay! Well, sort of.
The movie, which will not feature Spider-man despite it being one of Spidey’s main villains, is not part of the MCU and is the first of the Sony Spider-verse… without Spider-man.

Anyway, on to the first image which features Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the alter-ego of Venom:

To be fair, the image isn’t terribly exciting as it’s, well, basically just Hardy wearing a shirt and holding a note book. Exciting… but let’s be honest, some black and white symbiotic skin would have been better.
We also go this video (below) from December’s Brazil Comic Con Experience where Hardy and director Ruben Fleisher appeared and dropped some very interesting tie-bits about the movie: “We want to be as true as possible to the comic with our film,” he said.
“But our story is primarily based on the Lethal Protector and the Planet of the Symbiotes book.”
The Lethal Protector story in the comics saw Venom become more of an good buy, well, anti-hero and saw Brock leave New York and move to San Francisco. Planet of the Symbiotes was a study of how the symbiote and Brock were connected. It also saw him fight an army of Symbiotes with the help of Spider-man.
Interestingly, some folks online are claiming that the notebook Hardy is holding has three readable words: The Life Foundation. This ties into what Fleisher is saying as in the Lethal Protector miniseries the foundation kidnaps Brock and extracts some of the Venom DNA which allows them to create the Symbiote ‘children’ Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony… which probably explains why the movie has the #WeAreVenom tagline.
It’s notable that both stories involves Spider-man. It’s also notable that Hardy, while promising to make the best Venom movie possible as he realises how important it is to the fans: “I just wanted to say that I give you my word of honor that I’m going to do everything that I can to deliver the best Venom that I possibly can muster,” mentions how important Venom is to the Marvel Universe… we’re just trying to clutch at straws that this is still connected to the MCU, aren’t we?
