So, full disclosure… I was too old for Power Rangers when they first arrived so they were a franchise i knew only from my little brother and his friends who would watch it and play with the toys.
I had a loose grasp of the concept, of course – five teens were given power and a sacred duty by an aliend space ship (and its side-kick robot) to fight evil aliens and monsters as and when they appeared to destroy earth (etc). They had cool vehicles that could combine into a giant robot, so no threat was ever too big.
So, when the movie came out in 2017 I was pleasantly surprised to find that, despite the obvious silliness, I enjoyed the adventure and the characters – especially when they weren’t in brightly coloured hero-suits.
And, yes, I would have given my hard-earned coin to see a sequel.
However, it was not to be; but the story is not yet over.
During Hasbro’s financial call, it was revealed that they – having recently acquired the rights to Power Rangers from Saban – are planning on bringing the heroes back to the big screen.
Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner revealed that Hasbro and Paramount Pictures are, at the moment, in talks to develop a new film based on the Power Rangers intellectual property.
The movie, is unlikely to be related to the 2017 movie (although it’s possible for now) and there’s nothing else known about it.
But with Hasbro pushing ahead with a revitalised Transformers franchise thanks to Bumblebee, it seems our childhoods – old and new – will have a bit future on the silver screen.
What say you all? Go, go or no, no?
