Well, the glitz and glamour has settled down as The Oscars draw to a close for another year and not only was it a big night for Hollywood, it was a big night for Marvel, if not as big as hoped.
Black Panther didn’t win the Best Picture award, losing out to Green Book, but it came home with three oscars in Score, Production Design and Costume Design, so it’s not to be laughed at. Also, while not Disney, Into The Spider-verse took the Best Animated Feature award home, which made us very happy.
Personally, while I’d never undercut the cultural significance of Black Panther, I never felt it deserved the award because, as far as being just a movie went, it’s a below average comic book movie. My personal hope for the statue was BlackKKlansman, which is a gem of a movie.
I’m also delighted that the wonderful Olivia Coleman got the Best Actress award… she’s an absolute gem on every conceivable level.
Also, while we’re big fans of Mahershala Ali, we would love to have seen Richard E Grant win as he’s been one of my favourite actors ever since i stumbled across Withnail and I all those years ago n BBC 2.
The Visual Effects not for First Man is also truly deserved… that movie had me on the edge of my seat thought all the flight and test sequences and yes, Infinity War was superb too but we’ve had ten years of jaw dropping superhero shenanigans.
Special mention too for Rami Malek for his Best Actor award for his performance as Freddie Mercury on Bohemian Rhapsody; yes, the movie wasn’t as hard hitting as it could have been and has since been surrounded in controversy, but there’s no denying that Malek was superb as the rock icon.
