After what feels like an eternity, Batwoman has returned, and in honestly amazing fashion via “A Narrow Escape”. What started out as “villain of the week” with the poorly named “Detonator”, turned into a great study of character for multiple members of the cast.
First and foremost, I liked how Kate was still struggling with the death of Cartwright. Even putting Alice behind bars in Arkham was not enough to get that feeling to go away. Many shows have struggled to show off PTSD and anxiety-related feelings, but Batwoman did a really good job of using glares, sound effects and distorted imagery to paint a really good picture of what Kate was going through.
And with all that guilt, it felt right for her to “fall off the wagon” if you will by giving up Batwoman temporarily. Only for her to be thrown in via the bombings.
Having this all tie into the death of Lucius Fox was well handled. With a seemingly random dead end turning into a calculated attack to erase the evidence. And to find it really was a Crowe? And that the Crowe was only hired to rob Lucius Fox of Wayne Tech specs…by Tommy Elliot? Yeah, that was something. As was Luke confronting him. Usually I’d be against such things because they’re played out badly, but because of the Kate PTSD situation, it made it all the better.
Plus, hearing that Batman may have killed Joker? That was cool.
Meanwhile, Alice’s time in Arkham wasn’t going well, and so being the “Queen” that she is, she figured a way out of it. That opening scene of the episode with her and Kate together really threw me for a loop (because I had forgotten that she was in Arkham for a bit. Also, this is now the second Arrowverse show in a week to play Mortal Kombat 11, just saying), but once it was clear what was going on, it was all the tragic.
Plus, as if that wasn’t enough, now she’s going to be ruling Arkham from the inside and causing her own brand of chaos. Leaving open many possible storylines for the future.
Finally, it seems like Julia Pennyworth is sticking around, and I’m thrilled! She’s being really funnily portrayed, and now there might be a connection between her and Sophie. So let’s see where that goes.
“A Narrow Escape” brought back Batwoman in top form. Where will it go from here? Not sure, but I’m excited!
