As hard to believe as it is, Kevin Smith’s second movie – and arguably funniest – Mallrats is 25 years old this year and, on its quarter-century, Smith has given us some great news.
The on-again/off-again sequel to the movie, Twilight of the Mallrats will see a full house of cast returning.
We’ve known for some time (here) that stars Jeremy London and Jason Lee were returning along with Shannon Doherty, Michael Rooker and Ethan Supplee but now it seems that’s just the beginning.
“Everybody comes back,” Smith says.
“TS (London’s character) has a really like, poignant part too. I’m very happy with TS’s part two. The thing I’m most happy about… the thing I feel most clever about in regard to the movie, obviously one of us can’t come back, right? Stan’s gone. So, there is a Stan Lee scene, and it makes absolute perfect sense. And when you see it, it’ll fucking break your heart and make you cry and while you’re laughing. It is so like, I’m not saying I’m clever, but it’s f*cking clever. And I get to pull it off without bringing in somebody that’s not part of the family, so to speak. It’s pretty damn wonderful. So, he’s represented as well. He’s a big figure, obviously, in Brodie’s life.”
TS’s partner in crime, Brodie (played by Lee), will have a fun story too according to Smith: “Brodie’s a character that like, was awarded a second bite of the apple because he was right,” Smith said.
“Like, you know, one of Banner’s frustrations with her father is that he’s so like, ‘I was right. Like the culture turned in my way comic book culture, I predicted this.’ So, he’s insufferable to her for that reason.”
Despite being a kid from Ireland, Smith’s Clerks and Mallrat spoke to me in a very personal way when they came out as they seemed to be movies in which I could identify almost every character. When he released Clerks II a few years back, I felt the same again – catching up with characters dealing with adulthood, fumbling in the dark was, once more, identifiable to me. I can’t help but feel that Twilight of the Mallrats might be something similar.
No release date for the movie yet, but I’ll keep you posted as and when I hear more.
Let me your thoughts, gang…
