One of our favourite movie theories here at FTN Towers is that Stu Macher, one of the original two killers in Scream, played by Matthew Lillard, is still alive in the Scream universe – I’m not going to break down the myriad of reasons why, there’ll be posts below – and now the star himself, in the wake of the chaos around the seventh movie’s production, has spoken about if he’ll return.

Matthew Lillard has been quite open before about returning to the role with the original plan for Scream 3 being to have Stu orchestrating the whole thing from his prison cell, but that was then and this is now, so will we see him back?
“I don’t think so. I don’t think so. I mean, look, with what they’re going through right now, I have no idea where that goes,” Lillard says.
“If there’s a world where it makes sense, then sure. I mean, they keep mentioning it, they keep tip-toeing around the outside… I hope they put it to bed one way or the other. I can’t walk down the street without somebody asking me if I’m going to be in Episode 35 or whatever.”
Lillard is referring to the recent developments that saw Scream 5 and 6 star Melissa Barrera fired from the movie and her costars and then director leaving shortly after, leaving the movie production in limbo, but it was recently confirmed that despite all this, the seventh Scream movie, writers Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt would be returning for the next movie and they have hinted in the past that they are not against Stu’s murderous return.
Honestly, I would love to see the character return for a new Scream movie but, even if he never does, the movies have loads of fun nods and hints that he’s still out there and it’s as much fun spotting those as it would be if Stu came back one past time. Maybe.
