Star Wars Celebration Japan: Details on The Mandalorian and Grogu movie including Sigourney Weaver’s character

While the attention of Day One of Star Wars Celebration Japan was focused on the new Darth Maul series and Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter movie, there was some great news about next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu movie too.

One of the big reveals centred around of FTN’s favourite ladies, Sigourney Weaver, who is joining the Star Wars cast in the movie, as we learned that her role in the movie is that of a pilot and a leader who fought in the Rebellion and is now standing for the New Republic. We also learned, from the actress herself, see the interview below, that she hires the Mandalorian and Grogu… but for what? I guess we will all find out next May.

Jon Favreau and Sigourney Weaver talk about the movie:

During the presentation we also saw new images of Weaver in her X-Wing pilot flight suit (and she looks amazing!) as well as Mando, played by Pedro Pascal once again, Grogu and a familiar red droid on the street with Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios who was a character from Rebels who popped up in The Mandalorian season 3 and will now play a big role in this movie.

We’ve heard that Weaver fell in love with Grogu while filming the movie and the actress seems to support this while talking on stage: “When I watched [The Mandalorian], I fell in love with all the characters, especially this guy [Pedro Pascall] and of course Grogu stole my heart.”

Check out the images:

She reveals that Grogu is a bit more grown up than last time we saw him in The Mandalorian season 3: “I feel like Grogu was sort of transitioning from a little learning creature to someone who has real skills. And indeed, he is the apprentice now, and I felt that I could see a big difference between that in the series.”

During the panel too, while not available to us to watch, a two minute clip of the movie was shown to the crowd, and it saw Mando fighting a Garrison of Emperial troopers inside – yes, we see inside – an At-At Walker before he flies out, Grogu in hand, blowing the walker up, sending it crashing down a cliff edge. We also see a montage of action scenes, Mando and Weaver’s character interacting while Grogu tries to use the Force to steal sweets.

Pedro Pascal and Dave Filoni talk Mando and Grogu:

We also see Grogu blowing up a small droid with the Force and then swimming underwater and yes, it’s as adorable as you think. Oh, and before the end, we get a glimpse of Jabba the Hutt’s son Rotta who is a ripped Hutt, right, and a fighter in a gladiator pit… being watched by Mando and Grogu in the crowd.

Yup, this movie looks like it’s going to be a blast!

The Mandalorian and Grogu comes to cinemas in May 2026

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
