All spinoffs dead as Dexter: Resurrection gets ready for season 2

We have known for a month or so that Dexter: Resurrection had been greenlit for a second season but now we have an update on the state of the wider ‘Dexter universe’, after the shock cancellation of the much-better-than-it-should-have-been Dexter: New Blood.

Dexter, who celebrates two decades on TV screens next year, had been looking down the barrel of a wider, more expanded TV universe for a while there with the prequel series New Blood doing well (yes, it was a hit, hence the shock of cancellation) and a Trinity Killer prequel series ready to go with John Lithgow already lined up to return to the role, however, all that started to change when New Blood was pulled and it started to look like Showtime and Paramount were aiming to keep the main series going but getting cold feet on the spinoffs and prequels.

The change-up came after Paramount merged with Skydance and the new leadership saw the worth of Dexter but not of having several shows expanding the lore, resulting in the previously greenlit for a second season New Blood beign cancelled out of the blue, which is a shame as it was set to explore more of Brian Moser’s background and to introduce more new/familiar faces, namely James Doakes.

But, as feared – I love Dexter and would take any number of spinoffs if they were as well written as New Blood and Resurrection – Dexter Daily is reporting that conclusively, “All other Dexter spinoffs are dead”.

This means that Lithgow will not be returning as Trinity, we will not be seeing any more of the younger Dexter Morgan and co, and also the touted Lady Vengeance series spinning out of Resurrection and starring Krysten Ritter will not be happening either.

So, yes it’s a bit crap but here at FTN, I have, over the years, learned to never say never – Dexter himself has been reborn twice – and honestly, as long as we have Hall playing our favourite serial killer, we’re still winning.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
